Our Engagement
Even though we've been engaged for 8 months now, i still think about the proposal as if it was yesterday especially on days like today (valentines day) where I am reminded of just how lucky I am. If you ask Albert he will tell you just how awful my memory is, yet somehow i remember everything about this day up to the tiniest little detail.
It was day 11 of our Route 66 journey and we were leaving Holbrook Arizona and heading to the Grand Canyon in attempt to make it in time for sunset. On the way there i remember that there was an option to take a detour to the Antelope Canyon. (Which we were keen to do as we had often seen breathtaking pictures posted on instagram) So we decided to follow our hearts even though it did mean risking our chances of seeing the sun set over the Grand Canyon.
Upper Antelope Canyon, Arizona. (If you haven't been, GO.)
4 hours behind schedule (which was totally worth it) and the sun began to set so we jumped back in the car and made our way to the Grand Canyon. After a long drive we finally arrived and i couldn't believe the views. We found a busy platform and quickly captured a couple of photos before it got too dark. As we missed the sun setting we were extra keen to be up and ready to watch the sun rise.
We woke up at 5:30am to get ready for the 6:08am sunrise. As this was our 1st and only night at the Grand Canyon. My main concern was to get ready as quickly as i could so that we could jump straight into the car and find the main viewing platform in time for sunrise. I was desperate to make it so i threw on whatever spare clothes I could find (Jeans and a baggy jacket) tied my hair in a scruffy bun and refused to wear any make up, which i didn't realise I would later regret. After driving around for about 10 minutes Albert decided to pull over and stop in the next available parking spot we could find. It didn't turn out the be the main viewing platform that we had hoped for, but a small break in the trees that was quiet, empty and where we had a breathtaking view of the whole canyon (little did i know that this was the perfect scene for what was about to happen.)
Albert asked me to take a photograph of him as the sun was rising. At this point I hadn't had any photos myself so i asked Albert to do the same.
And then, just moments before Albert proposed he took this photo. There I was sitting on the edge of the canyon with my legs swinging and body shaking. As soon as he had taken the photo I shuffled backwards, still looking out onto the canyon. As i turned around to stand up there he was, on one knee holding a beautiful box with a diamond ring inside (which made everything prior to this moment worth while as it all unfolded more beautifully than I could have ever imagined.)
So after 6 years of dating, Albert finally popped the question and after a whole lot of excitement (and shock) i said YES!
